Visit Middelburg

A vibrant city brimming with historical wealth

Anyone visiting Middelburg will enter a city where history, culture, and the Zeeland charm effortlessly intertwine. As the capital of Zeeland, Middelburg has been the beating heart of the province for centuries. Historic buildings, charming squares, tranquil canals, and vibrant events make the city a versatile destination for a day trip or a multi-day stay. Whether you enjoy culture, shopping, gastronomy, or simply wandering through old streets: Middelburg never ceases to amaze.

The city exudes history. During the Golden Age, Middelburg was even the second most important city in the Netherlands, after Amsterdam. That rich history is still evident today. At the same time, Middelburg is young, creative, and vibrant, thanks in part to the students, artists, and entrepreneurs who bring color to the city. On this page, we’ll take you through the four most important sights that will make a visit to Middelburg unforgettable.

Fortress town of Middelburg

Stronghold with waterways, harbors and quays

During the Golden Age (17th century), Middelburg grew into an influential port city. The Zeeland Chamber of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) was the most important after Amsterdam, and for good reason. Traces of this connection to the sea are clearly visible in the many quays, locks, and marina.

But the water was also used for defense, as you can still see along the old city walls in their characteristic star shape. A stroll along the canals offers a beautiful view of the ramparts, the various bastions, and the places where Middelburg’s eight gates once stood. The Koepoort (Cow Gate) is the last tangible ornamental gate in Middelburg.

Middelburg was also used several times as an atmospheric, authentic, and monumental backdrop by filmmakers. For example, the magnificent Baroque Oostkerk served as the backdrop for the film Michiel de Ruyter.

For the film “Battle of the Scheldt,” the characteristic streets of Middelburg’s city center were used, and a patrician house on Wagenaarstraat was also shown as the town hall of Vlissingen.

The Abbey Complex and De Lange Jan

The historic heart of Middelburg

A visit to Middelburg isn’t complete without a stroll through the impressive Abbey complex. This monumental structure has been the heart of the city since the 12th century. Originally founded by Norbertine monks, the abbey today is a place where history, culture, and government converge.

Within the abbey walls surrounding the abbey square, you’ll find the Zeeuws Museum and the Province of Zeeland, among other buildings. The cloisters, with their Gothic arches and serene atmosphere, invite you to stroll. Be sure to take the time to admire the details: old gravestones, stained-glass windows, and historic facades tell the story of centuries of Zeeland’s history.

One of the city’s most recognizable symbols is undoubtedly the Lange Jan, the 90.5-meter-high abbey tower that towers high above Middelburg. A climb of the 207 steps is the only barrier to a breathtaking view of the compact, green city, the polders of Walcheren, and, on a clear day, even the Belgian coast. The carillon of the Lange Jan rings regularly and provides the soundtrack to city life.

Cultural heritage

The historic city center and the Market

Middelburg’s city center is one of the best-preserved historic centers in the Netherlands. With more than 1,100 monuments, every street and square tells a story. A stroll through the center is an experience in itself.

The beating heart of the city center is the Markt (Market Square). Here stands the imposing late-Gothic Town Hall, a true masterpiece with its ornate façade, statues, and turrets. Regular guided tours offer insights into Middelburg’s history and the city’s administration.

On Thursdays, there’s a weekly market, featuring fresh regional produce, Zeeland delicacies, and artisanal specialties. The Markt is also surrounded by cafés and restaurants where you can relax for lunch, drinks, or dinner. Anyone visiting Middelburg will quickly discover that the city offers a perfect balance between history and contemporary charm.

Lovely strolling

Canals, courtyards and hidden gems

What makes Middelburg particularly charming are its many canals, small bridges, and hidden courtyards. It’s no wonder the city is called the ‘Little Amsterdam of Zeeland‘. A bike ride through the city and along the canals offers a unique perspective and lets you discover Middelburg in a relaxed way.

There are also countless quiet spots that you’ll only find if you venture off the beaten path. Think of the Kuiperspoortje, a beautifully restored street lined with old warehouses, or the Hofje onder den Toren (courtyard under the Tower), where time seems to stand still. These places showcase Middelburg’s versatility and make a visit extra special.

For photographers, romantics, and those seeking peace and quiet, these hidden gems are a key reason to visit Middelburg and stay longer than planned.
